Turtles & Tortoise
Turtles and tortoises are
reptiles which have a shell. They move very slowly. Most turtles live in water
and have legs like flippers. Tortoises usually live on land or fresh water.
Turtles spend most of their lives at sea. They come
ashore to breed.
The female turtle digs a
hole in sand or soil in which to lay her eggs. About two months later, the eggs
hatch.
The hatch lings make their own way to the sea.
Marine or sea turtles spend most of their
lives in the sea. Many sea turtles, such as the green sea turtle, have webbed
feet or flippers to help them swim. Some marine turtles can swim 35 kilometers
per hour.
Today there are few giant
tortoises left. Many have been hunted by people and animals that have been
brought through into the area. Giant land tortoises live on islands in the
Pacific and Indian Oceans.
